Halloween is right around the corner. Fall is a wonderful time of year, not only for the atmosphere, but the temperature for outdoor workouts. This time of year is perfect, but with this time of year also comes temptation. While there are temptations out there that will totally sneak up on you there is one particular that slaps you in the face. Halloween candy.
Indulge Less
Change it Up
If you don’t have it around, you can’t possibly make a poor decision, right? But, you don’t want to be that house on the block that doesn’t give away something on Halloween night, then don’t be. Get candy that you’re less likely to eat. For example, if you’re ultimately into chocolate, don’t buy chocolate. Buy candies like Sour Patch Kids or Jolly Ranchers so that you’re not tempted to eat the candy you’ve got waiting for your trick or treaters.
Manage Your Hunger
This may easier said than done because, let’s face it, most of the time those temptations sneak up on us. While you can make a decision to either eat it or not eat it, it is ultimately up to you. Try drinking a glass of water or snacking on your favorite fruit, cheese, or nuts.
While you aren’t going to be feasting on these things, you will at least be making better choices and not eating candy, right?
Have An Alternative on Hand
If you know that you’re going to encounter candy at work, take snacks with you to work. Have something close by so that you can just reach around and grab it. If your mind knows that there are alternatives there to unhealthy halloween candy, then you’ll more than likely choose the healthy option.
Don’t Over-Buy
Buying tons of halloween candy doesn’t benefit anyone. If you live in a small neighborhood, it’s more than likely unnecessary to need ginormous amounts of candy. The lesser amount of candy that you have in the house makes it less likely for you to indulge in.
You don’t want to run out of candy, but you certainly don’t want to have a bunch of left over. Getting the right amount can be tricky, but the great thing that you’ve got going for you? Turn off your lights when you’re out of candy and you’re golden. Problem solved– You’ve got none left over!
Buy it Last Minute
If you’re one of those over achievers that has their candy a month ahead of time, good for you. My luck? I’d get it and want to start munching at it before halloween was even a thought. There are a few benefits to buying last minute– When I say last minute… I mean last minutes. As in evening of.
Number 1-The shelves at the store are mostly picked out so you’ve got lesser to choose from. This means it’s the candy that you aren’t likely to want to eat.
Number 2- You’ve got less time to eat the candy.
Number 3- You’ll more than likely buy less because you won’t overthink the amount of kids. You’ll likely want to get in and get out to get home and beat the rush of trick or treaters.
Number 4- It will be on sale.
Savor One
Pick one piece of candy per day and enjoy it. Try to pick a time when you know that you’ll want or even need a sweet treat. Try thinking of the moment in your day when you’ll need it the most. Mid afternoon is usually around the time when everyone crashes. Have a piece of candy to pick you up and quench your taste of sweetness.
Mouth Wash
If you’re the one that has the privilege of handing candy out, you may have the mentality of, “one for me, one for you”, while this isn’t a bad mentality for one or two kids, you’ll have tons of kids coming to your home. Thirty kids later and you’ve eaten half the candy.
One great way to combat that? Use mouth wash. No one likes candy after minty mouthwash. You’ll be less likely to snack if you’ve got mouthwash after taste.
Healthier Options
Who Says it Has to Be Edible?
Pencils
Try getting personalized, fun pencils for the kiddos to use in school. They may not like them more than candy, but at least they’re useful and less harmful to their teeth and internals!
Temporary Tattoos
Temporary tattoos aren’t candy either, but they are super fun for the kiddos to play around with later. They can trade them with their friends and they can have a blast watching as they stick– And they’re glow in the dark!
Straws
Throw a cider mix in with the straws and you’ll be good to go. If you don’t want to spend the money on cider packets, just provide the straws. Every kid loves straws.
Other Edible Options
Bags of Chips
An individual bag of chips can be expensive. While it’s ok to have one bag, more than likely, you’ll want to save them for the trick or treaters. A great way to combat the sweet tooth and a great portion size too!
An apple
Apples are the more expensive choice, but they’re the healthiest route to go. If a kid doesn’t have another option, they’ll go for apples. Add a pack of peanut butter or caramel with the apples and you’ve got a great snack.
Baggies of grapes
Throw a few grapes in a sandwich baggie and offer each kid a “worm” for their treat! This is a fun and creative treat. Kids will get a kick out the worm!
Halloween candy does not have to be a bump in the road or the obstacle that you dread. There doesn’t have to be a big ordeal that makes life tricky when it comes to over-indulging on the halloween candy, but if you follow these steps you’ll find that dealing with the obstacle of candy around halloween, it won’t be a problem.
